50 Years For You...

It's hard to believe it's been 50 years since we opened our doors (technically the lid of our briefcase) and as we reflect on our past and look ahead to what comes next, we know that we have you, our members, to thank for this incredible journey. So, we wanted to take this opportunity to say Thank You. Thank you for allowing us to be your friend and trusted financial partner through the years. We would not be where we are today without your support and the dedication of the UFirst team and board members (past and present). We are proud to continue to serve the members that gave us our start as well as the greater community.  

A Special Message For You

Hello Friends, 

October 1, 2021, will mark the 50th Anniversary of UFirst Federal Credit Union. We are so incredibly proud to have reached this milestone. Our credit union began as SUNY Plattsburgh Federal Credit Union, when the Business & Economic Department, the United University Professions and the Civil Service Employees joined together with a vision of providing the faculty and staff with the opportunity to save and get loans at a fair rate.

Over the years, numerous select employee groups and several mergers with other credit unions attributed to our growth, and in 2002 with a diverse membership, we amended our charter to a community charter. This allowed us to serve all those living, working, attending school and worshipping in Clinton County, NY. Changing our name in 2006 was completed to better reflect our membership and SUNY Plattsburgh FCU became UFirst FCU. The “U” represents our roots of being a University Credit Union and putting “U” the member, front and center in all or our decisions.

We’ve come a long way over the last five decades, we have grown to $95 million, and four branch locations from our humble beginnings on the campus of SUNY Plattsburgh. The credit union began with 39 members in October of 1971 and ended 2020 with 8,974. Along with our additional branches, we now offer a full menu of eServices allowing our members to access their accounts wherever they go.

2020 saw another expansion to our charter, allowing us to serve Essex and Franklin Counties in NY as well as Grand Isle and Franklin Counties in Vermont. As we begin expanding into these additional counties, we will continue to work to find solutions that will financially empower our members in each stage of life and provide them with the personal service they’ve come to expect.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our UFirst Family. I’m forever grateful to the service and dedication of our volunteer Board of Directors, our Supervisory Committee Members, our staff and our membership. As we move forward into the next 50 years, we will continue to live the credit union mantra of “People Helping People”.
